ABOUT ECG

What is an ECG?

An ECG is a quick, painless test that records the heart’s electrical activity using stickers placed on your chest, arms, and legs. It does not deliver shocks or cause discomfort.

Why might my doctor order an ECG?

An ECG helps assess:

  • Heart rhythm or arrhythmias
  • Chest pain, palpitations, or fainting
  • Effects of heart medications
  • Pre-operative status
  • Baseline before starting certain drugs

How to prepare

  • No special preparation needed
  • Take usual medications
  • Wear a two-piece outfit
  • Avoid heavy lotions on the chest
  • Chest hair may be trimmed for electrode contact

What to expect

  • Stickers placed on chest, arms, and legs
  • Recording takes 10–20 seconds
  • Total visit: 10–15 minutes
  • Painless; mild tugging when stickers are removed

After the ECG

  • Resume normal activities
  • A cardiologist reviews the tracing
  • Results sent to your referring provider
